Sales close rate shows the share of eligible opportunities that become closed sales. The arithmetic is simple. The definition of an opportunity and the time period determine whether the number is useful.
Basic formula
Closed-won sales ÷ qualified opportunities × 100 = close rate For the complete framework, see our sales incentive measurement and ROI hub.
If a team closes 24 of 80 qualified opportunities, close rate is 30 percent.
Define the denominator
Keep raw leads, appointments, proposals, and qualified opportunities distinct. Define qualification using observable signals such as need, fit, ability to buy, decision access, and plausible timing. Teams ready to act can explore high-ticket incentive strategy.
Measure separate rates when useful:
- Lead to consultation.
- Consultation to qualified opportunity.
- Qualified opportunity to sale.
- Proposal to sale.
Choose a time method
A period method divides sales closed during a month by opportunities handled during that month. It is fast but can mix opportunities created in other periods. It also helps to read cost of discounting sales.
A cohort method follows opportunities created or qualified in the same period until their final outcome. It better reflects conversion but requires time for the cohort to mature.
For long sales cycles, report both current activity and mature cohort rates.
Segment the rate
Break close rate down by representative, location, lead source, product, deal-size band, campaign, objection category, and whether an incentive or discount was presented. Avoid drawing conclusions from very small samples. It also helps to read incentive program roi.
Pair close rate with revenue quality
Pair a stronger close rate with average order value, gross profit per opportunity, cycle time, customer experience, and commission to see the full revenue picture.
Use it in an incentive test
Record all eligible opportunities, whether the discounted travel voucher was presented, and the final outcome. This reveals whether a stronger, more exciting reason to buy is helping your team turn qualified conversations into wins without discounting. For a worked example, see review the reported furniture retailer result.
Turn close rate into a revenue decision
Review close rate versus conversion rate and how to measure a travel voucher campaign.
Next step: Schedule a campaign consultation to see exactly how a discounted travel voucher can turn more qualified opportunities into profitable closed business.
